SOUTHVIEW NEWS 2000
Volume 28, No. 1
To our valued guests - Hoping you had a happy holiday season and are enjoying 2000 so far. We celebrated both holidays here at Southview - Ringing in the millennium on the lake, with a bonfire, skating rink, cannon blast and friends.
1999 was a good year for our business, but we suffered the loss of our Husband, father, leader - C.E. "Bud" Tress 1927 - 1999 - Bud Tress passed away at home peacefully, July 27, in his 73rd year.
THE YEAR THAT WAS
During 1999 we experienced great weather with sunshine most of the time, little rain, and yet our lawns remained green 95% of the season. Panfishing was fantastic, bass and muskie - great. Walleye fishing was work most of the time, but good catches of quality fish were taken when they were active.
You, our guests, were very pleased with all of the new value items we were able to add to your vacation. Compliments never ceased with regard to the decks, barbecues, microwaves and of course, the heated pool. What a hit it was with the hot days and nights we enjoyed all season. The pool will be in operation from opening in May until Labour Day (longer if the weather permits.)
WOULD YOU BELIEVE...
We have purchased for our boat and motor fleet;
- 6 new bass boats and engines
- 4 new 16' deluxe boats and 15hp electric start engines with pedestal seats, livewell, running lights and bilge pumps
- 26 brand new 9.9hp engines for trouble free operation
- new upholstery for one of our pontoon boats and a new four stroke engine as well
- boat seats with back rests and anchors in all of our 14' boats
WHAT'S HAPPENING
We have been very busy again this year with some major renovations to twelve cottages, #41 to #52. These cottages along with #56 and #57 have had installed a new electrical distribution system with underground electrical services and propane lines in 700 feet of trenching. The cottage renovations range from raised pine ceilings, to pine walls, insulation and new wiring, all 14 with new heating and air conditioning, some with new showers, jacuzzi tubs, vanities, bathroom sinks, kitchens and floors. These renovations are on the go now, with all of the underground services in and 6 of the 12 cottages in progress, but it tends to be very cold work. Barbeques will be connected permanently to the main line, so no more tanks in this area to run out half way through cooking.
We have built another 8 large decks and rebuilt cottage #9's existing deck to match the new recycled plastic look.
As well, there are plans to rework our store and check-in counter to provide an air of functionality and design - this means we don't know what it is going to look like yet, but it will be spectacular. Can't wait till you see it all.

DID YOU KNOW!
- Our 4 luxury suites were so popular, they were the first cottages booked for 1999 and are booking quickly for 2000. These 2 bedroom units are 2 storey with loft, cathedral ceilings, microwave, fireplace, television with digital satellite, central heat and air conditioning, 2 bathrooms and 2 person jacuzzi tubs.
- We now have 27 cottages with air conditioning to keep you cool.
- We have built over 10,000 square feet of decks over the past year, that's enough to make a deck 10 feet wide by 1000 feet long.
- Both our Osprey nests produced successful hatches for a total of 5 new offspring to these magnificent birds of prey.
- Our new deluxe 16' boats are deep v's which cut through rough water, and they have a totally flat floor area to make moving in the boat easy. They are roomy, comfortable, fast and safe, they boast 2 pedestal seats and 1 seat on the livewell, 2 anchors, electric
starting engines along with a livewell, running lights and bilge pump. This could be the ultimate in fishing boats.
- We have paddle boats, canoes, kayaks and sailboats for you to use - no charge.
 - We have mountain bikes at a nominal cost, for you to explore the backroads around Rice Lake.
- Our gazebo is full of information on activities in our area for you to choose from.
375 SLOTS MACHINES!
Kawartha Downs Race Track, which is located only 15 minutes away, has been home to great harness racing in Ontario for close to 2 decades. They now sport Stock Car Racing as a Friday night spectacular, and have also built a new Casino with 375 slot machines.
Harness racing runs on Saturday nights in May, Thursday and Saturday in June til November, and there is no longer any charge for entry or parking. Stock car racing requires an admission cost, and races start 7:30 each Friday night. The casino, (slots only) which also features a new buffet restaurant for lunch and dinner, is open from 11:00 am until 2:00 am daily; you must also be 19 years of age to enter the casino or casino restaurant.

RESORTS ONTARIO BIG FISH CONTEST
*Southview guests also took 5 out of 11 categories in the Resorts Ontario Big Fish Contest for 1999, which is exceptional considering we can only enter 9 categories. We cannot enter the 2 pike categories because there are now pike in Rice Lake. Congratulations to these winners as well.
CATCH AND RELEASE
Practice catch and release of the sport fish. Take some for your own consumption, but let other anglers catch their own. Offer tips and experience rather than fillets.
SOUTHVIEW WILL BE IN COLUMBUS, OHIO
February 10 - 13, at the fairgrounds during the Columbus Dispatch Sports, Vacation and Boat Show - Booth 1004. We will be promoting Southview to the attendees from this area, looking for new guests, winning over past guests, and seeing our current friends and guests who frequent the show. Tell a friend or business acquaintance we will be there, and have them come and introduce themselves.
Thank You,
Morgan
